Volunteer Docent Program
Join the Ventura Land Trust’s Volunteer Docent Program
Ventura Land Trust’s Volunteer Docent Program was born from the desire to develop a responsible recreation culture and conservation mind-set among preserve visitors. VLT Docents support our goal to balance public access and recreation with the preservation and enhancement of local biodiversity. An estimated 175,000 visitors came to Harmon Canyon Preserve in 2023. Because of this significant human presence, we must keep in mind that every footstep off-trail and into the creek channel has an impact on the plants and animals of the Preserve.
Anyone interested is encouraged to apply. An ideal docent is a person with a passion for nature and education who enjoys having conversations with people from all walks of life. Prior teaching experience and knowledge of Ventura's unique biogeography is helpful but not required. Docents can volunteer at Harmon Canyon or Big Rock Preserves. Shifts can be any amount of time spent on the preserve engaging visitors while hiking, biking, or hanging out at the trailhead. Docents record their time on the preserves and are encouraged to have at least 4 hours a month.
